If you are a college student in the Chicago area, chances are that you or someone you know will be affected by mental illness on campus. According to a 2004 NAMI National/Abbott Laboratories survey, 1 of 3 Chicago-area college students reported symptoms of serious mental illness. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14, and 75% have begun by age 24. What does that really mean? Where can you go for help? What can friends, parents, and schools do to support students affected by mental illness?
The NAMI Chicago College Outreach Program (NCCOP) is an initiative of NAMI of Greater Chicago (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Our goal is to increase mental health peer support, awareness, and education for all Chicago-area college students.
We hope this site can answer some of your questions and show you that whether you are parent, a partner, a friend, or a student who is affected by mental illness, you are not alone. Information and support is available—and there is hope.
