What is NAMI of Greater Chicago?

We are a not-for-profit self-help organization of parents, siblings, children, spouses, and friends of people with serious mental illness working together. NAMI of Greater Chicago is an independent affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), a grassroots family support movement with affiliates in all 50 states and more than 220,000 members nationwide.

NAMI of Greater Chicago’s mission is to provide hope and improve the quality of life for all in the greater Chicago area affected by serious mental illness by providing information, referrals, support, education, advocacy, and active outreach.

NAMI of Greater Chicago’s services include:

  • A HELPLINE staffed by consumers of mental health services and families members 10am-5pm, every weekday, giving information, referrals, and crisis support.
  • Education programs, including:
    • A free 12-week education course for families of consumers of mental health services, Family to Family; available in both English and Spanish.
    • An 8-week education course for consumers of mental health services, Pathways in Living.
    • Mental Health Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for experienced Chicago Police officers and fact sessions with all Chicago Police recruits.
  • An informative resource website with over 200 fact sheets and more--www.namigc.org.
  • Consumer and family support groups, and a social club for consumers--Consumer Club
  • Multicultural Outreach.
  • A Speaker’s Bureau.
  • A quarterly newsletter, as well as email updates to members on a variety of issues.
