For more information, referrals, support, and education about serious mental illness, call NAMI of Greater Chicago at (312) 563-0445, or visit the NAMI of Greater Chicago website, namigc.org.
Stigma, peer pressure, a lack of awareness, fear, confidentiality concerns, and lack of student involvement in the campus community can prevent college students from taking measures that would keep themselves and their peers as safe and healthy as possible.
By knowing where to go in times of crisis or need, students can not only improve their own mental wellness and safety, but can also help improve their campus’ overall mental health and safety by referring their peers and sharing important information with campus officials. By increasing peer support and student/administrator communication through initiatives like Peer Corps, your school can ensure that students see no barriers in getting the information, assistance, and help they need.
NAMI of Greater Chicago would be happy to assist Chicago area universities in spreading the word about mental illness by giving presentations, attending health fairs, or in other ways. Other community organizations like Erasing the Distance can also be great resources for spreading the word about mental illness
